LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) — He was a fixture on the WHAS Crusade for Children from its beginnings in 1954.
It is with great sadness that we report the death of WHAS-TV and Radio legend, Milton Metz. He died peacefully in Louisville at the age of 95.
Milton became one of this area’s most recognized personalities, first heard on WHAS Radio in 1946. He helped put WHAS-TV on the air. In fact, he was one of the first faces you saw on WHAS-TV in 1950.
Milton just celebrated his 95th birthday in September in rehab. The WHAS Crusade for Children staff brought him a cake. More than 300 viewers mailed get well cards to him after he had fallen and broken his shoulder in the summer and was in recovery last August. He loved every card and letter, and along the way, he always said he was getting wonderful care.
His trailblazing nighttime radio show called “Metz Here” was one of the first nighttime talk shows in the United States. It ran from 1959 to 1993.
He also hosted “Omelet” on WHAS-TV, an interview program that aired before the Noon News on WHAS-TV. He picked Faith Lyles as his co-host.
He retired from 840 WHAS-AM in 1993 but kept doing ads for TV and Radio.
He came to Louisville from Columbus, Ohio and married his beloved wife Mimi whom he met in Louisville. She died last April. He is survived by his son Perry Metz.
Funeral arrangements are pending through the Herman Meyer Funeral Home.

A startling statistic from the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta: currently 3.5 million Americans live with an autism spectrum disorder. The study also says that early intervention is the key to helping those diagnosed. The Ash family is taking that advice to heart. Crusade awards 230 grants
Crusade awards 100 percent of $5,465,933.47 collected this year to agencies
in Kentucky and Southern Indiana
Agencies, hospitals and schools across Kentuckiana that serve children with special needs are getting some great news from the WHAS Crusade for Children this week.
The Crusade sent out grant letters this week to 202 organizations to let them know their grant requests will be funded from the $5,465,933.47 collected during the 63rd annual WHAS Crusade for Children telethon. The 30-hour broadcast aired on WHAS11 television, 840WHAS radio and worldwide on WHAS11.com during the weekend of June 4 and 5. It is America’s most successful local telethon.
“The WHAS Crusade for Children is thrilled to be awarding 230 grants this year, which is an increase over last year. The ministerial advisory panel made some difficult decisions this year, as the requests were more than double the amount raised. They selected terrific projects and programs that will improve the lives of children with special needs across Kentucky and Southern Indiana, ranging from small communication devices to large capital projects,” WHAS Crusade for Children President & CEO Dawn Lee said.
One-hundred percent of the $5.46 million collected this year was awarded in the form of 230 grants to 202 agencies, hospitals and schools throughout the state of Kentucky and southern Indiana. This is the most grants awarded by the WHAS Crusade for Children in recent years.

“The Greatest!”
Just days after Louisville legend Muhammad Ali passed away, the people of Kentucky and Indiana dug deep and championed the 63rd annual WHAS Crusade for Children. The final tote board tallied $5,465,933.47 as “The Greatest” local telethon in America came to a close.
The 30-hour Internet/radio/telethon kicked off with an up tempo variety show headlined by Louisville Orchestra Music Director Teddy Abrams’ Jazz Band, hosted by WHAS11’s Rachel Platt and 840 WHAS radio’s Terry Meiners on Saturday, June 4. It all ended with Crusade volunteers crowding into WHAS-TV’s historic studio H singing the traditional “God Bless America” just before 7:00pm (EDT) Sunday, June 5, 2016.
“It truly is an annual miracle. We’re thrilled that the wonderful people of Kentuckiana stepped up once again to help children with special needs in our community by contributing so generously to the 63rd annual WHAS Crusade for Children,” said WHAS Crusade for Children President & CEO Dawn Lee.
100 percent of $170 million for the kids
In its first 63 years, the Crusade has raised over $170 million for children with special needs. One hundred percent of all donations raised Crusade weekend are returned in the form of grants to agencies, schools and hospitals that make life better for children with special needs.
It takes a cast of thousands to stage the annual miracle. From individual donors dropping pocket change into boots at firefighter road blocks to children with lemonade stands to corporations offering payroll deduction, it all comes together each year on the first weekend in June.

100 percent of $165 million
In its first 62 years, the Crusade has raised $165 million for children with special needs. One hundred percent of all donations raised Crusade weekend are returned in the form of grants to agencies, hospitals and schools that make life better for children with special needs.
It takes a cast of thousands to stage the annual miracle. From individual donors dropping pocket change into boots at firefighter road blocks to children with lemonade stands to corporations offering payroll deduction, it all comes together each year on the first weekend in June.

You have two ways to vote: credit or cash
When you click on a child’s photo below, you’ll be taken to another Web page that gives you two choices. Just clicking on the photo WILL NOT cast a vote!
You can use your credit card securely online or download the official voting form and send it in with your donation. That’s how it works.
Important!
You MUST select the child’s name online when using a credit card OR write it in on the mail-in form so the baby you are voting for gets full credit.
Remember dollars equal votes!
Voting is determined by donations to the WHAS Crusade for Children. The children who collect the most donations will be the winners.
Meet our 2017 Crusade Children’s Calendar entries!
The WHAS Crusade for Children is creating a 15-month calendar that will begin in October, 2016. It’s the 10th annual Crusade Children’s Calendar. The contest is open to children who are not older than 5-years-old by June 1, 2016.
How it works
People then vote for their favorite child by sending in donations to the Crusade. The child with the most donations (votes) will appear on the calendar cover. The child with the second most donations will appear on his or her favorite month. Third place will choose his or her month and so on til all months are filled. Please read the official rules below.
The Crusade will have professional photos taken of the top 16 children and those are the photos that will appear in the calendar. All children will be included in the calendar. Those who don’t make the top 16 will get day and date spots chosen in finishing order. Vote getter number 17 will get first choice of day and date, then number 18, etc.
