Success for WHAS Crusade for Children

Despite our nation’s dismal economic state, residents of Kentuckiana proved last weekend that giving to those in need is still a priority. The 59th annual WHAS Crusade for Children raised a total of nearly $5.2 million for children with special needs.

One-hundred percent of the donations will go to agencies, hospitals and schools that support children with special needs. Given the recent rise in unemployment rates, this year’s large contribution is especially meaningful, a shining example of what can happen when a strong community bands together for a good cause.

“We were very happy,” said Dawn Lee, CEO and president of the Crusade. “With the way the economy is going, the fact that the community continues to support the Crusade year after year tells a lot about our community.”

Once again the firefighters were responsible for bringing in a large portion of the donations through organized events throughout the year, as well as the weekend road barriers.

“The fact that [the firefighters] stand out there and give so much of their time — it’s a huge effort for them,” Lee said. “Without them, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do.”

The $5.2 million in donations is a testament to the Crusade’s power to reach out to the entire Kentuckiana community, and draw people together to support our society’s most vulnerable population.

“It crosses racial, ethnic, religious, political barriers,” Lee said. “This is the one thing that just brings people together to help kids, and other things don’t matter.”

Well done, all.
