Here’s more about the event from Lyndon Fire & Rescue:

Lyndon Fire and Rescue is pleased to announce that, in a partnership with Westport Village, we will be co-hosting the first annual Phyllis Knight Memorial 5k Run/Walk to benefit the Crusade for Children.

“This is a great opportunity for us to partner with our local businesses in a community-based event, and our collaborative efforts are for a noble cause,” said Fire Chief Russ Rakestraw.

This event will honor the memory, dedication and contributions of Phyllis Knight Gifford to the Crusade and the community.

Phyllis Knight Gifford was a pioneering female broadcaster in Louisville. She became the executive director and producer of the WHAS Crusade for Children in 1976, which celebrated several milestones under her leadership including a 25th anniversary and its first million dollar year.

The event will take place on Saturday, October 17th at Westport Village, located at Westport Road and Herr Lane. The race will begin at 9:30 a.m., and will be followed by Lyndon Fire and Rescue’s annual Safety Festival.

“Our annual Safety Festival was traditionally being held in our fire house in conjunction with Fire Safety Week. However, we felt that this opportunity to have our Safety Festival in a more open and public area, such as Westport Village, would give us a chance to reach more of our customer base,” Chief Rakestraw also said.

The Safety Festival will begin following the race and will last until 4:00 p.m. It will include area partners such as LG&E, Louisville Metro Red Cross and the Louisville Metro Police.

Attending the Safety Festival is free of charge, and community members of all ages are encouraged to attend with their family and friends.
