Fern Creek honored for Crusade fundraising

Recently, firefighters packed the Fern Creek Fire Station for a special presentation.

“The WHAS Crusade for Children is proud to present the 2009 Walton Memorial Trophy to the Fern Creek Fire Department,” announced Dawn Lee, Crusade President & CEO.

Fern Creek received the Walton Award because firefighters increased their Crusade fundraising total by a whopping 91 percent from the previous year. These aggressive fundraisers went from $121,000 to more than $230,000 even during the worst of the recession.

Congratulations Fern Creek!

Walton Trophy honors “Mr. Crusade”

The Walton Memorial Trophy was established in 1986 to honor the Crusade’s first Executive Director and longtime master of ceremonies Jim Walton. Jim was MC from the first Crusade in 1954 until 1979. He was known as “Mr. Crusade.”

Fire departments take pride in friendly competition

The trophy is awarded to fire departments that record the highest percentage increase over the previous year’s total. The award honors Jim’s love and commitment to the men and women who protect us as well as give so unselfishly to help the special needs children of Kentucky and southern Indiana.

Fire departments raise more than 50 percent of the Crusade’s donations each year by staging road blocks and other events. Any fire department or fire group that brings in $1,000 or more is eligible.
